Witch Creek Fire – Rancho Bernardo Disaster Map

| October 23, 2007

This is not the kind of map I like to make. Today the San Diego County published a list of homes in Rancho Berndardo that were lost on Monday as the Witch Creek Fire, pushed by 50 MPH gusts, burned through the “Lake Hodges Funnel”. This map shows a grim picture: Whole streets, whole neighborhoods lost to this blaze. These people have not yet been allowed to view the damage. The real story of this fire will be written in the weeks to come as everyone assesses the impact of this week’s events.

This is not a complete list of all homes lost to these fires, which will number in the thousands. But it can give you an idea of what the level of devastation some areas of San Diego have suffered. Oddly enough, some areas were spared directly adjacent to these burn zones.
