Rice Canyon Fire / Horno Fire – 12:00 Update

| October 24, 2007

Some information collected from multiple sources on status up in Fallbrook, Winterwarm and Bonsall. KUSI news is reporting that there is increased air tanker activity over Fallbrook this morning and additional ground crews with bulldozers working the Rice Canyon Fire. The southern boundary of the fire is reported to have stopped at Gird Road and the Fallbrook Country Club. Current winds over the fire remain calm with possible sea breeze building tonight towards sunset. Fire crews are reportedly taking this time to bring maximum force to bear against the most vulnerable areas of the fire. At present no one should try to go back into the burn area, as the chances of the fire doubling back once the sea breeze starts are just too great.

There is concern that the Rice Canyon Fire and Horno Fire could eventually join up inside Camp Pendalton. Again good data on the Horno fire is at present impossible to come by, we will update here once we know more about this blaze.

Bonsall was evacuated and continues to be closed to residents. While the Rice Canyon Fire is no longer moving rapidly, it is still a very large and dangerous fire that is now entrenched in the hilly back country around Fallbrook, Winterwarm and there is some concern that it could spread into the San Luis Rey river valley. This would could create another “Funnel” effect like we saw at Lake Hodges.
