How to lose a morning

| June 5, 2008

James Lileks — Man of Many Talents (and Interests) — collects (among many, many other things) old motel postcards. As with all this other stuff, he scans them in and posts them on the web, with his observations.

I made the mistake this morning of visiting that site and have been pretty much entrapped there for the past few hours. While my family settled down when I was eight, I’m still old enough to remember riding along (and later driving) on highways (not freeways — highways, such as Hwy 101 or Route 66 or US 395) and staying at motels. Poor TV receptions, floor-to-ceiling windows with curtains, linoleum floors, rattling air conditions, a pool (yea! a pool!), and breakfast at the diner (click on photo to see full image):

Ah, yes. I remember it well. ..bruce w..
